Name of your website?Simply Fitness Gear
Your name?
Jan Small
Your Location (city, etc)
Edinburgh
Please give us a short summary of your website?
My website is all about helping you choose the right fitness equipment and avoid costly mistakes
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I am passionate about health and fitness and I'd like to inspire others to reach their peak too
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
I started with a site about finding the motivation to lose weight in a healthy way back in 2004 (or maybe 2003 - can't really remember)
How did you decide on a name for your website?
I wanted something simple and which said exactly what the site was about without being too long
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
In depth information! There are a lot of sites out there talking about fitness equipment but they don't really go into the problems with a lot of the stuff out there. I have seen a lot of incorrect information in my research too. Most of the sites just want you to click on their ads and don't really care about the visitor - although there are a few good ones too.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
Create a hub where everyone can get the information they need whatever fitness equipment they are looking to buy.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
I'm not actually making any money from this site (although that would be nice in the future) but I have got a lot of satisfaction from producing it.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
Lots more interactivity - not just the current quizzes
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
I don't think it will be a problem but if it is I will get some help from my fitness friends who support what I am doing here
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Finding information on/getting to try out some of the fitness equipment I wanted to review - and the sheer volume of equipment out there
What has been your biggest challenge?
Getting CSS to behave in every browser - it just doesn't! Keeping going when the going gets tough...
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Well it's early days. I'm hoping to write articles and create a blog to help promote it.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
Sheer amount of work involved - many people have you believe you can just throw up a site in 5 minutes. It has taken me 5 months to get as far as I have.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
It's very new - just went live this month so it's early days. I have always kept up my handful of sites whether they gain traffic or not - they are like children that you can't just abandon no matter how impossible they are.
What Do You Hope for Your Site?
That people will come and be happy that they have landed in the right place and that they got a whole load of useful information on fitness equipment they couldn't find anyway else. I want them to enjoy their visit, bookmark the site and return the next time they are looking for information.
