What inspired you to launch your own website?
Being a family of keen anglers, we decided that there was an opportunity to provide Daiwa reels, rods, fishing tackle and equipment to the online buyers in South Africa.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
In 2000 I launched a website for our company ProSysCom that provides IT solutions including website design, website hosting and internet marketing. The URL is http://www.prosyscom.co.za
How did you decide on a name for your website?
It was fairly obvious that I chose http://www.daiwa.co.za as we fully endorse the Daiwa range of products, so we called the website Daiwa fishing reels and fishing rods - buy online.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
We are exclusively supplying Daiwa reels and rods and no other brands of rods and reels. It is also the most comprehensive online fishing tackle shop in South Africa
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
Our main aim with this website is to generate income and to allow our passion for fishing to show via our website.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
Well, we have just started the website, so we have not had too much to report on with respect to success. We have however spent a lot of time and money to get the website running. The future will tell us if we have made the right decision.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would probably spend more on the design and 'look and feel' of the website. I would also have invested a lot more in articles and information for the website.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Most definitely. We have the resources available to handle a big increase in terms of people and space for stock.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Not knowing everything about the shipping rates and packaging costs involved. We have also had some difficulty with product sourcing.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Loading all of the products with suitable detail and images which are presentable and easy for a visitor to find.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
We have use a Google adwords campaign to kick things off and have also advertised in a fishing magazine.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
Sales have been rather slow even though we have had a large nunber of visitors to the site.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
The site has only been running for 1 month and we expect to keep going with the website for at least the next 18 to 24 months.
Why do you believe this site will be successful?
We have noticed a complete lack of suitable online fishing tackle websites in South Africa and believe that within the next 2 years we will see a significant increase in sales as more and more people in South Africa get internet access and feel comfortable to purchase online with a credit card.
